How to Talk to Your Kids about Race: Through this workshop, parents gain a better understanding of how to effectively talk with children about issues related to race, second language, immigration and other forms of bias. Participants have the opportunity to practice talking about race in a safe and supportive environment. This workshop presents concrete strategies including how to watch for teachable moments and how to engage your children and others in these sometimes difficult conversations. Participants will leave with a list of resources to help expand their knowledge and skills in talking about race.
The N-Word: Participants understand the history of this loaded word, how it is used within and beyond communities of color, and ways to effectively discourage use. Discussion includes a consideration of context and how to create safe and intentional environments for discussing this topic effectively.
What is Racial Microaggression and How Can I Interrupt It?: Participants explore and understand microagressions and develop strategies to interrupt their own behaviors and appropriately challenge others who exhibit these behaviors.
“Racial microaggressions are brief and commonplace daily verbal, behavioral, or environmental indignities, whether intentional or unintentional, that communicate hostile, derogatory, or negative racial slights and insults toward people of color. Perpetrators of microaggressions are often unaware that they engage in such communications when they interact with racial/ethnic minorities. “
