CR Continued Discussion: Voting Rights and Voter Suppression

Gail Perry and Judy Knight, with Nancy Brown, co-facilitated the virtual Challenging Racism: Continued program Voter Rights/Voter Suppression, on 3/24/21, from 6:30-8:30 PM. About 18 people participated. The focus of the program was to look at the history and current trend of laws intended to restrict access to voting, after the largest voter turnout in modern history.

County Seeks Diverse Voices on Race, But So Far It’s Mostly White Women

Arlington is seeking diverse voices in its Dialogues on Race and Equity, but so far the biggest group of respondents have been middle-aged white women who are relatively affluent.

Arlington County Chief Race and Equity Officer Samia Byrd and Challenging Racism Director Alicia Jones McLeod, who are promoting a new questionnaire on the topic of race, see this as a sign to keep pushing for broader participation.

The Starbucks Foundation selected Challenging Racism to receive a $2,500 grant!

Thanks to Starbucks Partners and The @Starbucks Foundation for recognizing how we are creating more inclusive communities.

This grant is part of the Neighborhood Grants program, through which one or more Starbucks partners (employees) nominated Challenging Racism based on the important work we are leading in our communities. This round of Neighborhood Grants focused on supporting organizations that promote racial equity and create more inclusive communities, and Challenging Racism was selected among 4000 submissions from Starbucks partners across the U.S.

Challenging Racism is very proud to be recognized as one of more than 400 nonprofits selected to receive a Neighborhood Grant.

Challenging Racism: Learning to Lead Fall 2020

The latest offering of Challenging Racism: Learning to Lead began on Saturday, October 17th, leaded by facilitators Tim Cotman and Samantha Fletcher. This group of seven participants began with activities and discussions around their personal socialization to race and are currently more than halfway through the training program. Participants were introduced to Results Based Facilitation (RBF) skills and are practicing their skills in a safe space where they receive feedback and coaching.

The last two sessions of the training will include additional practice in facilitating conversations about race, the creation of a personal growth action plan to outline next steps in skill development and a meeting with workshop facilitators to discuss best practices in putting their training to use.
